When the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi began, Bertrand’s parents had to flee while his mother was pregnant with him. Upon return when the country was liberated, everything the family owned was gone, and most members of his mother’s family were lost in the horrid human massacre. Bertrand’s parents were forced to raise their children on the streets. A British man found Bertrand and recognized his artistic abilities and funded his education. Bertrand has decided to pay it forward and founded an organization, Irembo Foundation, that is dedicated to improving the community life and sustainability in educational aspect for the street kids, kids from vulnerable families and orphans. Ishimwe Bertrand is visiting the U.S. in June and July, sharing and selling his art to raise awareness and support for his Irembo Foundation.   He will have a few paintings for sale and will also bring raffle tickets for a free painting. He will have brochures that explain how people can sponsor a child to go to school. His foundation is a private foundation registered in Rwanda as an NGO and he is currently applying for a US 501c3 status.
